What do you think of writing ignments as home discipline?

A 4 year gets into a scuffle at school,writes an essay explaining why and what they intend to do about it.An older child might have be given several pages of sonnet,written in a foreign language and have to translate to english,before being permitted to return to activities they enjoy.What would be your ideas?
